Birchbox: Box 1

Since my mom got me a 6 month subscription to Birchbox, I thought I'd do a little review of each box I get and what's inside. Please bear with me when it comes to the pictures. I'm using a simple digital camera and I haven't quite mastered it (like how to avoid shadows, or whether its better or not to use flash).

I adore the packaging and presentation!

Such a pretty blue!

Haven't quite figured out how to get a picture of my nails, working on that.

This hair oil smells wonderful. And it doesn't weigh down my fine hair.

Haven't tried this yet. I usually use a dark brown liner so this'll be interesting.

This smells really nice. It's a light scent, not really meant for Winter.

I thought the name was hilarious.

This hair tie is so cute! And it looks cute on your wrist.

I'm so happy with Birchbox! I love how much a variety there is. I can't wait to see what comes next.

I know this isn't a recipe but let's do a Health factor.

Health Factor: Plenty of people with fibro have sensitivity to smells, so getting things like perfume samples might be a bummer (I'm just a little sensitive, so I only use a little at a time). When you sign up for Birchbox, you can select your skin type and there is an option for sensitive skin. If you don't have big sensitivities to smells and what not, then I definitely recommend Birchbox.

if you'd like to sign up with Birchbox! It's probably the best thing I've ever done!
Note; Clicking the link gets me points with Birchbox, which means I'll get to review more stuff.

Little update

I'm not up for a whole post, so bring out the bullets!

  • I've decided to add a "Health factor" to every recipe post. It'll talk about how doing this recipe can affect any health issues (like if somethings tough to mix and thus hurts my fibro).
  • Kate is leaving today for PR! You can see all her updates over at her blog
  • For the past 4 weeks I've gotten horrible headaches every day, that last hours. My doctor gave me some migraine meds, but they haven't helped at all. I'm going to try seeing the chiropractor my mom goes to. It's been so frustrating not being able to do anything. I really need to clean but the headache is already starting.
  • David started playing Dead Space 2 yesterday, and oh my gosh it is the scariest game ever. I thought the first one was bad but man, this takes the cake.
  • I'm finally making a dentist appointment. I've been putting it off for a couple years because of money, but I think I have a lose tooth so I gotta go. Thankfully I got some Christmas money, but paying for the dentist and the chiropractor is going to be tough.
  • I read 1984. It was really depressing. David and I were talking about how older books tend to lack good endings, or at least ones where people fight back. I really enjoy dystopia reads, but I think I'll stick to newer ones.
  • Sandy is a horrible guard dog. She barks at nothing, making us think we're about to be murdered or something.
  • I also finished The Hunger Game trilogy. I was a bit bummed with the third book (she makes the character pretty helpless) but I'm really happy I read it. And mom got me the hardcover set for Christmas, so I'm really happy I'll be able to read it again when I want.
  • I'm currently reading Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. A lot of it is pretty boring, with only a few interesting bits. I keep waiting for exciting stuff like in the movie trailers.
  • I had a wedding dream but it was too confusing to write about.
  • I painted my nails! Haven't done that in forever. It's taking some getting used to, but I like it.

That's all :)

Christmas Party

Every year I like to have a Christmas party. It's my favorite holiday, and I love decorating with a 50s feel. I tie on my vintage apron, bake tons of goodies, and sip apple cider with friends.

Of course we played Apples to Apples. It isn't a party till that sucker is brought out.

The party consisted of tons of eating, Apples to Apples, a gift exchange, random dancing, and philosophical debates. It was tons of fun :)

(I would have taken more pics, but it was more fun to just enjoy the party)

Chocolate Wasted Cake

For a Christmas party I had recently, I decided to make all kinds of wonderful goodies. But the main dessert would be a Chocolate Wasted Cake, whose recipes I got from here. Now normally, I show pictures of the whole process, but I'd rather show the pictures of what went wrong.

The recipe says to grease the pain, then sprinkle with cocoa, which I did.

Here they look fine. But after 30 minutes when I open the oven, the house fills with smoke. It was way too much batter for the cake pans

We(my mom and I) put foil around the edges so they wouldn't burn, since the middles were still crazy goopy.

Done. And not very pretty. But hey, I figure they'll be easy to stack since they're flat on top. the cake stuck to the pan. I had to take pieces of the cake and mush it together.

Difficult to get the frosting on because the cakes were so broken apart. Because of that, there wasn't enough frosting for the sides.

I didn't get a picture of it finished. It's sad, but it was delicious. It was just way too much work. The house filling with smoke, having to clean the oven, molding the cake, the cake falling apart. But it was yummy, so I'll give it that.

Health factor: This cake was pretty stressful, and it also ended up taking longer than expected, so I was getting pretty tired towards the end.

Funfetti Cake Bars

So the Computer Science department at UMW holds a Winter Wonderland party every year and being that this would be the last party we attend, I decided I wanted to make a dessert. I had planned on making this awesome strawberry dessert, but then I got hit with the flu. Luckily I was feeling good the day of, but I didn't have any ingredients for that dessert. I do try to always keep a box of Funfetti cake mix on hand, so I googled some recipes I could do last minute. I found Funfetti Cake Bars and decided to give them a go!

You will need:

1 1/4 cup funfetti cake mix
3/4 cup AP flour
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 cup butter, melted and slightly cooled
1 egg
1 egg yolk
2 teaspoons vanilla
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar

8x8 pan
A good way to get butter to soften faster is to cut it all up and set it out on the counter.

Smig lumpy, time to use the hand mixer.

Ah, much better. It will be pretty thick fyi.

Spread it out as best you can and bake at 350 degrees for around 30 minutes.

All baked! Take it out when the middle is still floppy.

And here they are cut up!

So what was the verdict? Delicious! Very rich and yummy, and everyone seemed to really enjoy them. I'm actually going to make them again for a Christmas Party I'm hosting soon. I highly recommend them!

Health factor: These are pretty easy to make, the only thing is that it can be hard to tell when they're done, so my anxiety goes up a bit over worrying that they won't be cooked all the way.
